Chapter 9

What's Next

Hipster's grandmother, a gift from abroad, and the book that comes after this one

Hipster at a laptop on a video call with his grandmother, who holds up a framed photo of him toward the camera and smiles.

FBAR filed. Form 8938 answered. Hipster figured the paperwork chapter of his life abroad was closed. It wasn't. His grandmother, who still lives in the country he grew up visiting, has long hinted she'd like to help with a down payment. Plainly a gift, and a lovely one. But when money moves from her account to his, a different reporting question opens up, one this book doesn't cover.

The FBAR and Form 8938 ask what he holds abroad. Neither cares where it came from. A gift or inheritance from a foreign person is its own category, with its own threshold, its own form, and its own penalty structure.

His co-founders aren't going anywhere either. His 20 percent stake in the company carries filing questions of its own that turn on how much of it he and other US persons own. Those get answered in the next book, where the instinct that got Hipster this far still applies: don't assume, check the rule, file on time.

Coming Next in the Series

Hipster's grandmother's gift is where the next book picks up: what counts as a reportable gift or bequest from someone abroad, the filing threshold, and Form 3520. The company from Chapter 3, and what his co-founders mean for his own filing obligations, carries forward from there.
